3rd post for today.
Not to complain. I want to post all the SS notes. Writing is tiring.
START! Please ignore all spelling and grammer mistakes.

CHAPTER 2

Governance in Singapore -
1) maintains stability in government;
2) meet people's needs;
3) build a nation;
4) maintain sovereignty.

People get to choose their leaders who will make important decisions.

Government in Singapore -
1) Legislature: Make laws and keep order and peace.
2) Executive: execute laws
4) Judiciary: make sure laws passed are just. Makes decisions and judgements independantly.

"Leadership is key"
- Leaders who are honest and have integrity.
- Do what is right and not popular.
- Leaders are specially selected and groomed.
- Must be incorruptible to gain confidence and respect of people.

"Anticipate Change and Stay Relevant"
- Make decisions
- Be forward looking.

"Reward for Work and Work for Reward"
- Reward hard work and talent.
- Encourage to do better.
eg. Students.

Progress package 2006:
to help retirees, low wage workers, invest in next generation, appreciate NSmen

"A stake for everyone, opportunities for all"
- let people have a say.
- more chances created to let people speak.
- consider public's feedback and suggestion.
- policies to consider people's needs and interest.

TRAFFIC FLOW.

ALS -
1. gantries set up to monitor motorists who drove into restricted areas.
2. motorists had to pay to use certain roads.

* motorists unhappy about increased costs in entering CBD.

ERP -
1. replaced labour-intensive ALS.
2. using up-to-date technology.

*AlS more efficient and effective.

Park-and-ride scheme -
1. let motorists park their vehicles in allocated car parks, then switch to shuttle bus.
2. motorists find it troublesome, thus completely switching to public transport to enter CBD.
3. policy was unsuccessful. Millions of dollars was invested.
4. Shuttle bus companies unable to survive with little passengers.

*Scheme still used today. Hope to use it even in future.

Vehicle Quota System -
1. Apply for COE.
2. LTA limits number of vehicles issued.
3. car entitled to owner for 10 yrs.

POPULATION POLICY

Population grew rapidly -Large families - jobs available, security for old age

Family planning needed - Need for smaller families, stop at 2, maintain replacement lvl at 2.1 children, use of contraception, legalise abortion.

After 1980s,

Declining birth rate - family policy worked, higher cost of living, people marry later.

Needed more people to enter workforce.

AN AGEING POPULATION
1. demand for more healthcare,
2. smaller security forces,
3. reduction in competitveness,
4. strain on working population.
